Why PowerCenter beats the rest

Or in other ways; why I prefer working with PowerCenter

The little things in life can make a great difference someone once said. Be it a nice coffee cup, a ray of sunshine in the morning or that one sweater that is just so darn comfy. Even when it comes to software, the same logic can be applied. I mainly work with ETL software; I’ve worked with PowerCenter, OWB, ODI, SAS Enterprise, MSIS and Data Stage. But somehow PowerCenter always stood out. It’s in the little things I guess.

It’s been a while since I worked with Informatica’s PowerCenter. It didn’t take me long to get used to it though, it’s like riding a bike; you never forget! I also never forgot my two favourite options in PowerCenter;

  1. Propagate Attributes; change the attribute of one port, PowerCenter changes all the other attributes in it’s path

  2. Select Link Path; visualize throughout the mapping which ports are connected to my selected port (more ETL tools have this function!)

But only recently I came across a third favorite option; you can automatically add an extra port to a flat file that you’re processing and this extra port will hold the flat file's’ name. That’s genius! It’s just a check you have to set in the flat file’s properties and the port will appear.

Checking the ‘Add Currently Processed Flat File Name Port’ gives an extra port in the columns tab:

No more scripting to keep track of the flat files you loaded; just apply this and you’re done! Someone at Informatica thought this was a good idea and voila! Something small that can make a great difference for some developers!
